Endings

The legacy of Dame Cicely Saunders:
the woman who changed the face of death

In the summer of 2019, we responded to a call-out from The Ceiling Project for women-led teams to write short new musical theatre pieces around the theme of untold and inspirational stories about women in historical and contemporary settings. Inspired by the work of Dame Cicely Saunders, founder of the modern hospice movement, we set about writing a piece on this ‘Shero’ of ours. In October 2019 it was announced that our piece - titled Endings - had been commissioned as one of 5 musicals for Chapter One: She, the Storyteller, The Ceiling Project’s first collection of pieces.

The Premise

July 2005. Dame Cicely Saunders sits in St Christopher’s Hospice, London. Now a patient of the Hospice she opened in 1967, she recalls the early years of her life and work, recounting her stories while an artist paints her portrait.

Performance

Endings was performed in a workshop presentation on Friday 15th November 2019 at Bishopsgate Institute Library.
